Carolina Panthers’ Hendon Hooker Discusses Bond with Bryce Young

The relationship between Carolina Panthers quarterback Hendon Hooker and former University of Alabama star Bryce Young has evolved from collegiate rivals to teammates in the NFL. Both players were drafted in 2023, with Young being selected first overall by the Panthers and Hooker taken by the Detroit Lions in the third round, 68th overall. As of last Thursday, Hooker is part of the Panthers’ practice squad, preparing for the upcoming 2025 NFL season.
Their connection dates back to the Manning Passing Academy in 2022, where they first met and bonded over the unique pressures of playing quarterback. According to Kassidy Hill of Panthers.com, the two athletes discussed the expectations that come with their prominent roles in the sport.
Shared Experiences and Growing Friendship
Hooker, who had limited playing time with the Lions, participating in just three games during the 2024 season, recently reflected on his relationship with Young. “Me and Bryce have been cool, before the draft process, going back to like the Manning Camp,” Hooker stated. He emphasized their long conversations about play calls, defensive reads, and strategies to elevate their gameplay.
The rivalry between Young and Hooker intensified during the 2022 college football season. In a memorable matchup, Young’s Crimson Tide faced Hooker’s Volunteers, resulting in a thrilling 52-49 victory for Tennessee. This game not only highlighted their competitive spirits but also set the stage for their future collaboration in the NFL.
Building a Strong Connection at the Combine
Their relationship deepened further at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. While waiting for their flight to Indianapolis, Hooker and Young spent approximately two hours discussing various aspects of their position, from intricate details of pass protection to their larger career aspirations.
“I remember traveling to the combine,” Hooker recalled. “Me and Bryce, I think we might have talked for maybe two hours on just pass protection in the airport. But we’ve had a pretty good bond for a pretty long time.” This exchange served not only as a professional discussion but also as a reinforcement of their mutual support as they navigated the transition from college to professional football.
As both players work to solidify their roles with the Panthers, the camaraderie they built over the years will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their development and success on the field. With Hooker now officially part of the Panthers’ practice squad, fans eagerly anticipate how this dynamic duo will perform in the upcoming season.
