The Arizona Cardinals have placed cornerback Garrett Williams and defensive lineman L.J. Collier on injured reserve (IR) ahead of their match against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed these roster changes, which will significantly affect the team as they prepare for a crucial game in the NFC West standings.

Williams sustained a knee injury during the Cardinals’ recent matchup against the Carolina Panthers on September 14, 2025, following a collision with safety Budda Baker. The specifics of Collier’s injury remain unclear, but both players are now required to miss a minimum of four games under NFL rules before they can be considered for a return. Gannon expressed optimism, stating there is a chance for both players to rejoin the squad before the season concludes.

In a positive development for the team, cornerback Max Melton, who was carted off the field with a knee injury during the game against the Panthers, will participate in practice today. However, Gannon indicated that Melton’s status for the upcoming game in The Bay remains uncertain, describing him as day-to-day.

Gannon noted the potential for Denzel Burke to step up if Melton is unable to play. Burke impressed during his time on the field last week, filling in after Melton’s exit. Gannon remarked, “Denzel played a bunch because after Max went out, he came in and subbed in for Max. His role changed after, if I’m correct, not playing a snap Week 1. He played I think 66 plays or something like that. That’s a lot of snaps. I think he’ll take a jump from this last week to the next time he plays. He’ll play better, but I thought he did a good job.”

As the Cardinals prepare for this significant matchup against the 49ers, they face the challenge of maintaining their momentum in the competitive NFC West. The outcome of Sunday’s game will have strategic implications for both teams as they vie for better positioning in the standings.

With the roster adjustments and the potential impact on game strategy, fans will be closely watching how the Cardinals adapt to these changes against a formidable opponent.
