Bears GM Ryan Poles Addresses Caleb Williams’ Training Struggles

A recent video of Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams responding emotionally to missed throws during a training camp drill has ignited discussions among fans about his development. The footage, which gained significant attention on social media, prompted Ryan Poles, the Bears’ general manager, to address the situation in an article published by ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on Thursday.
Poles expressed his perspective on the viral clip, stating, “I actually think it’s pretty cool,” referring to the reactions that Williams’ performance has generated. He acknowledged that while there was a challenging practice, he did not anticipate the widespread concern regarding Williams’ struggles. “I didn’t know it was a national crisis of Caleb struggling,” Poles added.
The Bears have high hopes for Williams, having hired offensive specialist Ben Johnson as head coach this past winter. The organization aims for Johnson to guide Williams through a pivotal second season following a rocky rookie campaign. Williams ended the previous season ranked 31st in the NFL among qualified players, with a 46.7 adjusted QBR and a 62.5 percent completion rate, while also taking a league-high 68 sacks.
Poles pointed out that expectations for immediate success, particularly in relation to renowned quarterbacks like Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, were unrealistic given that Williams is still adapting to a new offensive scheme for the second consecutive offseason. He emphasized the necessity of patience in Williams’ growth as both a quarterback and a leader. “I think as a human being, I want it to happen super fast,” Poles said. “But I think… what’s reality, though? It’s going to take time.”
As the Bears prepare for their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins on August 13, 2023, the decision on whether to play Williams and other key starters remains uncertain. While the emphasis is on ensuring Williams is ready for the regular season, he may benefit from facing at least one opposing defense to gain valuable experience.
Poles’ comments reflect a broader understanding of the challenges faced by young quarterbacks in the NFL. With a focus on long-term development, the Bears are committed to supporting Williams as he navigates the complexities of professional football.
