Anthony Goodman Takes Helm as New Sports Editor at Sampson Independent

Anthony Goodman has been appointed as the new sports editor for the Sampson Independent, effective immediately. Goodman, who joined the publication in March 2024, has been instrumental in covering community news and will now lead the sports section, focusing on athletics throughout Sampson County.
Goodman’s Background and Commitment to Community Sports
A native of Sampson County, Goodman has deep roots in the area, having grown up in the Midway community. His diverse experiences include living in Illinois and California, where he developed a passion for sports while playing basketball, football, track, and wrestling in middle school. A graduate of Northern Vance High School, he has spent years mentoring young athletes as a coach at Hobbton High School and Hobbton Middle School, as well as through the Sampson County Parks and Recreation Department.
“I’ve always had a love for sports and for helping young people grow, both on and off the field,” Goodman said. “Anyone who knows me knows I’m truly unbiased and have a love for all of our local teams. I treat all students like they’re my own.” At 35, Goodman is a husband and father of five, which he cites as a significant motivation in his life and career.
Publisher and Community Support for Goodman
Sherry Matthews, the independent publisher of the Sampson Independent, expressed mixed feelings about Goodman’s transition from the news side of the paper to sports editor. “I’m really going to miss Anthony on the news side of things,” Matthews remarked. “In his short time here, he has proven himself to be a skilled writer and a good journalist.” Despite her sadness about his departure from news coverage, she expressed excitement about the opportunities ahead in sports.
Goodman has gradually taken over many aspects of the sports section since the departure of the former sports editor Brandt Young. Matthews noted that Goodman has demonstrated his capability, along with the support of stringers such as David Johnson, Daron Barefoot, and Mike Carter. She believes he will continue the momentum Young established, providing the comprehensive coverage that local teams and young athletes deserve.
“I have every confidence in Anthony’s ability,” Matthews added. “He has worked hard to earn this promotion, and I believe he will give this job, and every school, everything he has to offer.”
Goodman’s background as a coach has equipped him with a unique perspective on the importance of local newspaper coverage. He emphasizes that such coverage bolsters teams and recognizes the achievements of young athletes. Reflecting on his childhood experiences, Goodman shared how sibling rivalry with his brother, James “J.D.” Davis Jr., inspired him to excel in various sports. Their grandmother’s efforts to introduce them to different activities, despite financial constraints, fostered a lifelong love for sports.
Looking Ahead: Celebrating Local Talent
As Goodman steps into his new role, his primary focus will be to highlight the hard work and talent of student-athletes across Sampson County. “There’s so much greatness right here in Sampson County,” he stated. “I’m looking forward to highlighting our local athletes and sharing their stories with the community.” Goodman expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the support he has received, emphasizing his commitment to bringing attention to the achievements of the area’s youth.
In conclusion, Goodman’s promotion marks a new chapter for the Sampson Independent, promising a dynamic approach to sports coverage that resonates with the community. His dedication to celebrating local talent and fostering connections through sports will likely strengthen ties within Sampson County and enhance the paper’s role in local athletics.
