Allen Canaries Coach Rupp Excited for Season After Last Year’s Progress

Allen Canaries football coach Joel Rupp is entering his third season with a sense of excitement and optimism. Recently, he and members of his team operated the concession stands at J. Birney Crum Stadium during the annual Drum Corps International (DCI) competition. This event attracts drum and bugle corps from across the country, filling the stadium with music and energy.
“Running the concession stands for that helps the football program a lot,” Rupp noted. He emphasized the community aspect, stating, “It’s also good for Allentown and our kids to see the stands packed like that.” Rupp fondly recalled his own playing days at Dieruff, expressing pride in the program and the support from parents and volunteers.
Following a challenging 2023 season, where the Canaries finished with an 0-10 record, the team improved last year, starting with a 2-0 record that included victories over two Philadelphia programs. They concluded the season with a significant overtime win against rival Dieruff, bringing their final tally to 3 wins.
Despite the successful finish, the team faced challenges during the season, suffering seven losses, with six of those games seeing the defense concede more than 35 points. Even after a 24-0 defeat to Muhlenberg Township in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Rupp is “extremely optimistic” about the upcoming season.
“We got everything we need for No. 1s; we’re just missing some depth,” Rupp explained. He is particularly enthusiastic about enhancing the team’s passing game, which was lacking last season. “We’ve been practicing on getting the ball out quick and fast. We don’t have too many linemen, so we’re going to be looking to take care of those guys throughout the season.”
While the team lost key players like Kemahni Wimberly and Ja’lil Johnson, who contributed a combined total of 17 touchdowns last year, Rupp highlighted the return of significant playmakers. Junior receivers Jaylen Walker and Michael Taylor, along with senior Zion Stokes, are expected to play pivotal roles. Junior running back TeShon Gaynair, who scored a touchdown in the comeback against Dieruff, will also be a key defensive player after achieving six sacks last season. Additionally, defensive end Kymanhi Moss and defensive back Elijah Watkins are set to strengthen the team’s defense.
Despite having the smallest roster in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC), Rupp remains focused. He recalled a time as an assistant coach when the team faced a game with only 16 players. “You know you have to turn up that discipline and be able to really count on the guys who have been here,” he said. Rupp is determined to cultivate a strong team spirit, saying, “Everybody wants a huge cake, but we’re ready to take a cupcake and roll with that.”
During a recent camp, Rupp expressed disappointment at the dwindling number of players, noting that only 40 players remained after initial enthusiasm saw 70 players participating in the offseason. “Some were here for maybe a week, and they realized that they’re not cut out for football,” he explained. Despite this, he remains hopeful about recruiting more players once the school year begins on August 25, allowing new recruits until Week 4 of the league games.
Rupp acknowledged his nerves about having such a small team, particularly in the lines, but pointed out a silver lining. “The good news is that while we only have 40 kids, they are all committed to the program,” he said, highlighting the dedication of the remaining players.
The coaching staff is also evolving, with Eric Collazo and Derek Thorne returning as offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively. New roles have been assigned, including Alvin Wright, who has transitioned from middle school coach to freshman head coach. Veteran coach Grant Whary will assist him, and former Allen players Ivan Nieves and Isaac Williams have rejoined the program, adding valuable experience. Rupp expressed enthusiasm about these additions, noting that they enhance the team’s capacity for in-game adjustments and support.
In a recent highlight for the program, players and coaches participated in a one-day camp hosted by AJ Brown, a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles. “It was a great experience for all involved,” Rupp said, noting the significant turnout of city youth and the positive atmosphere created by having a Super Bowl champion in attendance.
The upcoming schedule for the Allen Canaries features various competitive games, all set to start at 19:00 unless otherwise noted. The team will have a scrimmage on Saturday at Pottstown at 10:00. Their first official game will be against Dobbins Vo-Tech on August 23, followed by a series of matches through the fall season, culminating in their highly anticipated face-off against Dieruff on October 25 at 14:00.
As the season approaches, Rupp’s focus on building a committed and disciplined team is clear. The Allen Canaries aim to build on last season’s progress, striving for a successful and exciting year on the field.
