TEDx Gary Returns to Inspire with “Space and Expectation” Talks

The eighth edition of TEDx Gary will take place on October 18, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Bergland Auditorium, located at Indiana University Northwest. This local iteration of the globally recognized TEDx series will feature speakers addressing the theme “Space and Expectation.” Each talk will last no longer than 18 minutes, showcasing a diverse array of ideas worth sharing.
Organized by married couple Jeffrey and McKenya Smith, TEDx Gary began in 2020 with the inaugural theme “Using What You Have to Get What You Want.” The event has garnered attention for its engaging content, particularly last year’s standout presentation by Dr. Ravi Iyer, whose talk, “The Power of Intentional Focus,” became the most viewed TEDx talk with over 2.4 million views.
Dynamic Line-Up of Speakers
This year’s speaker roster includes a variety of voices from different fields. Notable participants are Paulina Johnson from Detroit, Dr. Akemi Bailey Haynie, Dr. Kenichi Haynie, and Masayoshi Haynie from Chicago, along with local attorneys Michael and Shelice Tolbert, and Sandra Carr from Gary. The lineup also features Kristy Carreon from Crown Point, Kristine Szabo from Cannes, France, Crystal Melton from Gary, Robert Ordway from Indianapolis via Lake Station, and Dr. Altovise Nicole Ferguson from Gary.
The topics to be covered are diverse, ranging from optimizing social media algorithms to creating safe spaces amid chaos. “The evening will be filled with ideas worth sharing, and we are excited to be back on the campus of Indiana University Northwest,” said McKenya Smith. She highlighted the impressive backgrounds of the speakers, noting that they include corporate leaders, medical professionals, and even a survivor of the Hiroshima attack.
Boosting the Local Economy
The event is not only an opportunity for intellectual exchange but also a chance to stimulate the local economy. “TEDx Gary this year will contribute to the local economy in Gary and the Region because some speakers are traveling from Indianapolis, Michigan, and even France to participate,” Jeffrey Smith stated. He added that these visitors will likely stay at local accommodations, dine at nearby restaurants, and support small businesses in the area.
Over the years, TEDx Gary has featured more than 35 speakers, all aimed at championing innovation and creativity. The event strives to foster a positive narrative about Gary and stimulate community engagement. “We’re doing our part to present a positive narrative of the city,” McKenya Smith mentioned.
Looking forward, TEDx Gary is already planning future events. McKenya Smith noted that individuals interested in becoming speakers can apply through a straightforward application process, which typically opens in March and closes on May 16.
As TEDx Gary prepares for another impactful event, the anticipation builds not only for the ideas that will be shared but also for the connections that will be made within the community.
