Remembering Arturo O. Valencia: A Life of Love and Dedication
Arturo O. Valencia, affectionately known as “Art,” passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family. His life, marked by hard work, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to his loved ones, leaves a legacy that will endure. Born in North Hollywood to Alejandro and Luisa Valencia, Art was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, father-in-law, and friend. He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie Valencia, with whom he shared a profound partnership for over 73 years.
Art and Nellie’s union produced four children: Mary George, Arturo Valencia, Andy Valencia, and Becky Trillo. His family grew to include numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished. He also had siblings, including Tito and Choco, and was predeceased by his sister, Lola Gonzalez, and brothers, Alex, Raymond, and John.
Art’s Passion for Family and Community
Art’s passions extended beyond family to various activities that brought him joy. He often took his family camping at Glen Ivy, where they created cherished memories together. An avid bowler, he dedicated over four decades to the sport, competing at the Bowl-O-Drome and later at Gardena Bowl. In the 1960s, he showcased his athleticism by playing in a men’s softball league at Torrance Park. His skills as a pool player earned him a reputation as one of the best in Torrance, with numerous tournament wins.
Raised in the close-knit community of La Rana, Art attended Torrance High School. He built a notable career, reflecting his strong work ethic and expertise. He dedicated 20 years to Soule’ Steel in Carson before becoming a Master Mechanic at McDonnell Douglas. His commitment to precision and excellence garnered him great respect from colleagues and peers.
A Lasting Legacy of Love and Craftsmanship
Art was a self-made man who rose from modest beginnings to create a life filled with purpose and accomplishment. He took great pride in restoring and maintaining his home, with each project showcasing his craftsmanship and dedication. A voracious reader, he was a lifelong subscriber to the Daily Breeze, finding joy in the written word, especially knowing that his sons once delivered that very paper.
Though Art is no longer physically present, his spirit lives on through the stories shared and the lessons imparted to his family. He is remembered for the love he freely gave and the values he instilled in those around him. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM on October 27, 2025, at Bethel Baptist Church, located at 1501 W Carson St, Torrance, CA 90501-3934.
