British actor and musician David Kaff, best known for his role as keyboardist Viv Savage in the cult classic film This Is Spinal Tap, has died at the age of 79. His passing occurred on Friday, with his band, Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom, announcing that he “peacefully passed away in his sleep.” The news was shared via a heartfelt message on their Facebook account.
The statement from the band expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event. David always had a kind word and a quick wit that would slay you where you stand. Then he’d make you smile doing it! RIP dear brother.”
Born David Kaffinetti, he was a founding member of the English progressive rock band Rare Bird, which was active from 1969 to 1975. During this period, the band released five studio albums and was one of the first acts to sign with Charisma Records. Their single “Sympathy” reached number 27 in February 1970, selling approximately one million copies worldwide.
Career Highlights and Legacy
Kaff’s portrayal of Viv Savage in This Is Spinal Tap became iconic, with memorable lines such as “Quite exciting, this computer magic!” and his life motto, “Have a good time…all the time.” Following the film’s release, he performed as Savage during the band’s appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1984. Although the fictional band continued to perform after the movie, Kaff departed from the group later that year and was not involved in further promotions for Spinal Tap.
After his notable role, Kaff contributed to various musical projects, including bands like Model Citizenz and Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom. Recently, the original This Is Spinal Tap film was re-released, and a sequel directed by Rob Reiner is set to premiere on September 12, though Kaff does not appear in the sequel.
His contributions to both music and film have left a lasting impact, and he will be remembered fondly by fans and peers alike.
