A Chihuahua is being celebrated as a hero after it played a crucial role in rescuing its owner who fell into a crevasse on the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was exploring the glacier on Friday, March 15, 2024, when he accidentally broke through a snow bridge and plunged nearly 8 meters (about 26 feet) into the icy depths.
According to Air Zermatt, a rescue and transport company, the man was equipped with a walkie-talkie and managed to communicate with someone nearby. This individual quickly relayed the accident to emergency services, but the exact location of the incident was initially unknown.
After approximately 30 minutes of searching, the rescue team spotted the Chihuahua pacing atop an Alpine rock. The dog’s activity drew the attention of a team member, leading them closer to the location of the crevasse. As the team focused on the Chihuahua, they were able to more easily identify the hole into which the man had fallen.
The rescue team rappelled down into the crevasse, successfully retrieving the man along with his furry companion. Both were subsequently airlifted to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Air Zermatt spokesman Bruno Kalbermatten commented on the significance of the dog’s involvement, stating, “Imagine if the dog wasn’t there. I have no idea what would happen to this guy. I think he wouldn’t survive this fall into the crevasse.”
The company praised the Chihuahua, calling it a “four-legged hero” on their website and noting that it may have saved its owner’s life in what could have been a life-threatening situation.
This incident highlights the remarkable bond between pets and their owners, showcasing how a loyal companion can make a difference in critical moments. The quick thinking and actions of both the dog and the rescue team illustrate the importance of preparedness and communication in outdoor adventures, especially in challenging environments like the Swiss Alps.
