Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has initiated a criminal investigation into allegations that staff at Centreville High School in Fairfax County facilitated abortions for students without parental consent. Reports suggest that this practice may have involved the misuse of public funds to cover the costs of these procedures.

According to multiple sources, the investigation stems from claims that school officials arranged and financed abortions for female students, including a 17-year-old, in 2021. The implications are significant, as they raise concerns about whether local, state, and federal funding may have been utilized inappropriately. In a statement released on Wednesday, Youngkin expressed his deep concern regarding the allegations. “I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them,” he stated.

The Governor has instructed the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct a thorough probe into the matter. The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system has also launched its own investigation in response to the allegations. “At no time would the situation as described in these allegations from back in 2021 be acceptable in Fairfax County Public Schools,” the district said in a statement to the media.

The school district has engaged an external investigator to ascertain the facts surrounding the claims. “We have taken immediate action engaging an external investigator to get the facts,” FCPS noted. “We all deserve to know exactly what happened. We will take appropriate action as necessary.” In previous communications, FCPS stated that it was unaware of any instances where staff had arranged abortions for students. “Not to [our] knowledge. We have launched an immediate investigation into these concerns as soon as we were made aware,” the district clarified.

FCPS policy encourages students to discuss any pregnancy concerns with their parents or guardians, although it does not explicitly require school employees to inform parents about such discussions. This nuance has drawn criticism from pro-life organizations, which have condemned the alleged actions of the staff at Centreville High School. The group 40 Days for Life stated on social media, “A Fairfax high school secretly arranged and paid for student abortions—without telling parents. This isn’t ‘healthcare.’ It’s state-funded child exploitation. Every official involved must be held accountable.”

As the investigation unfolds, the implications for the involved parties and the broader educational community remain to be seen. Youngkin’s decisive action underscores the seriousness with which state authorities are approaching these allegations, aiming to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of sensitive matters involving minors.
