President Donald Trump did not attend the religious vigil for slain activist Charlie Kirk held on March 10, 2024, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The vigil was attended by approximately 85 members of Congress and significant figures from the right-wing community. Trump spent the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he spoke about Kirk’s death during a gala event on March 9.

During the “Hope Through Education” gala, Trump addressed Kirk’s murder and discussed the suspect, Tyler Robinson, suggesting that he had become “radicalized.” Despite Trump’s absence at the vigil, his influence permeated the gathering. Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, expressed sentiments on his behalf, stating, “President Trump loved you Charlie, so much.”

In addition to Leavitt, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Arizona Senator Jake Hoffman, a close friend of Kirk, spoke passionately about the impact of Kirk’s work and the collective grief felt in the wake of his assassination. Johnson described a mix of “unspeakable sadness and grief and anger” that followed Kirk’s death, while Hoffman emphasized the deep connection between Kirk and the current leadership, which resonated with attendees.

The vigil commenced at 18:00 local time, following which large crowds gathered outside the venue. Trump returned to the White House at around 18:30, missing the opportunity to unite with supporters and allies. The vigil included tributes from various speakers who highlighted Kirk’s contributions to the political landscape, particularly among young conservatives.

During his remarks, Trump reiterated plans to attend Kirk’s funeral in Arizona the following weekend, after his state visit to the United Kingdom. He commented, “It’s a very sad weekend in the sense that we lost a great person.” When asked if his wife, Melania Trump, would accompany him, he indicated that he had not yet discussed it with her.

In a broader context, Trump used the occasion to criticize the “radical left,” claiming they were celebrating Kirk’s death. “The problem we have is on the left,” he stated, continuing to express his views on the political climate in the country. He confirmed that his administration is investigating individuals who had celebrated Kirk’s death online.

The FBI identified Tyler Robinson as the primary suspect in Kirk’s murder after a lengthy investigation. He is expected to face charges related to the incident on March 12, 2024.

The emotional atmosphere of the vigil underscored the collective sorrow and anger felt by attendees. Speakers highlighted Kirk’s role in motivating a generation of young conservatives. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was met with chants of “USA! USA!” upon taking the stage, shared his personal connection with Kirk, referring to him as a “soulmate” and noted their shared commitment to challenging established powers.

As the investigation into Kirk’s death continues, the political ramifications of this tragic event are likely to resonate deeply within the American conservative movement.
