Ned’s Club, an exclusive private club in Washington DC, employs a meticulous selection process to curate its membership. The club, which opened its doors in January 2023, emphasizes a diverse mix of members by considering factors such as gender, industry, and political affiliation. According to Gareth Banner, the club’s managing director, the aim is to create a vibrant community rather than simply admitting those who can afford the steep fees.

To join Ned’s Club, standard members pay a one-time fee of $5,000 and an annual fee of $5,000. For invite-only founding members, the cost is significantly higher, with a one-time fee of $125,000 and annual dues of $25,000. Despite the high costs, interest has surged, with several thousand applications received since its launch. As of July 2023, the club’s membership had reportedly increased from around 1,000 to a much larger number.

Curating a Unique Community

A committee of 20 to 25 members plays a crucial role in the member selection process, guiding the club’s focus on maintaining a balanced community. This group, which Banner refers to as the club’s “eyes and ears,” consists of individuals from various industries and demographics. Notably, committee members like Teresa Carlson, president of the tech policy think tank General Catalyst Institute, and Keenan Austin Reed, CEO of the bipartisan lobbying firm Alpine Group, were recruited months before the club’s opening.

The committee meets quarterly to discuss programming and membership, fostering a collaborative approach to curation. While the club accepts applications from anyone, those lacking connections may find the process more challenging. This focus on personal connections is intentional, as the club seeks to establish a sense of community among its members.

What Members Can Expect

Ned’s Club’s application process includes an online form that inquires about job history, referrals, and community engagement. The committee looks for “good human beings” who are not only successful in their fields but also eager to contribute to the club’s atmosphere. Banner estimates that members typically fall within the top 5% of their respective industries.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules for rejection, the club is cautious about admitting individuals with controversial pasts. Reed noted that any significant drama or reputational issues could raise red flags during the vetting process. Additionally, one of the club’s unwritten rules is to avoid political discussions, encouraging members to leave their political affiliations at the door.

Ned’s Club aims to maintain a non-partisan environment. As Banner described it, the club embodies a “Switzerland” ethos, welcoming members from across the political spectrum. The committee actively recruits to achieve gender balance and seeks to increase female representation within its ranks.

In a city characterized by political tension, Ned’s Club strives to cultivate an exclusive yet harmonious community. As the demand for membership continues to rise, the club remains committed to its mission of creating a curated space where high achievers can connect and engage.
