Community Voices Oppose Stun Guns in Santa Clara County Jails
Growing concerns over the use of Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs), commonly known as stun guns, in Santa Clara County jails have sparked significant opposition from community members. In a recent letter to the editor published on October 22, 2023, resident Kathleen Early strongly argued against the implementation of these devices, citing their potential for misuse and the historical context of psychological experiments that illustrate the dangers of authority and control.
Early referenced the Milgram experiment and the Stanford prison experiment, both of which revealed disturbing insights into human behavior under authority. The Milgram experiment showcased individuals administering what they believed to be painful electric shocks to others, while the Stanford prison experiment highlighted how ordinary students could assume sadistic roles when placed in a position of power. Early emphasized that CEDs could easily become tools of torture, designed to incapacitate individuals while inflicting pain, and stated that they have no legitimate place in the correctional system.
She encouraged residents to voice their concerns to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to prevent the deployment of CEDs in local jails.
Another letter, authored by Virginia Smedberg, responded to comments made by former President Donald Trump regarding recent protests. Smedberg expressed her anger at Trump’s dismissal of demonstrators, asserting that her participation and the materials used to create her protest sign were entirely self-funded and driven by personal conviction. She conveyed her demand for an apology from Trump for mischaracterizing the motives and efforts of protesters who advocate for human rights.
In another commentary, Pragati Grover expressed her support for Neysa Fligor, a candidate for Santa Clara County Assessor. Grover praised Fligor’s combination of professional experience and dedication to the community, underscoring her integrity and commitment to fairness in property assessments. Grover urged voters to support Fligor, stating that she would bring accountability and transparency to the Assessor’s Office.
As discussions about governance and accountability continued, Genevieve Stoner criticized Congress for its perceived complicity in supporting Trump’s agenda. Stoner argued that Congress has lost its role as a co-equal branch of government, noting that Republicans have aligned themselves with Trump’s policies, undermining their legislative authority. She called for Congress to reclaim its power and hold the Executive Branch accountable.
The recent demolition of the East Wing of the White House also drew sharp criticism. Claudia Parker characterized the destruction as a reflection of Trump’s disregard for tradition and history.
