GRAND FORKS — Former University of North Dakota (UND) star Jonathan Toews is set to make a triumphant return to the ice with his hometown team, the Winnipeg Jets. The 37-year-old veteran is expected to sign a one-year contract on July 1, coinciding with the opening of the NHL’s free agency period.

The news was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, and has since been confirmed by the Jets organization. Toews expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m grateful to be making my return to the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets. It’s very special to come home and play in front of my family and friends in Manitoba. The Jets have been on the rise over the last few seasons and I’m eager to join the group and help however I can.”

The Legacy of Jonathan Toews

Toews has spent his entire professional career with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he served as captain and led the team to three Stanley Cup titles in 2010, 2013, and 2015. His leadership and skill on the ice have made him a revered figure in the hockey world.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff remarked, “We are excited to add a proven winner like Jonathan Toews to the Winnipeg Jets. It will be a unique opportunity for Jonathan to play for his hometown team. His talent, drive, and experience will be a great complement to our club. We will withhold further comment until July 1.”

Toews has played in 1,067 regular-season NHL games, tallying 372 goals, 511 assists, and 883 points.

Challenges and Comeback

Toews last played in April 2023, having sat out the past two seasons due to health issues related to long-term COVID effects. During his time away from the game, Toews spent five weeks in India undergoing a detox program aimed at restoring his health.

Despite these challenges, Toews announced earlier this year his commitment to returning to hockey in the fall of 2025. He has been training in Arizona with renowned skating coach Boris Dorozhenko, signaling his determination to make a strong comeback.

A Hometown Hero

Toews is one of Winnipeg’s most celebrated hockey players. His contributions to the sport have been recognized in various ways, including the renaming of the Dakota Community Centre in south Winnipeg to the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex following his Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy win in 2010. He was also awarded a key to the city during a Stanley Cup parade that year.

Toews played at UND from 2005 to 2007, helping the program reach back-to-back NCAA Frozen Fours. His collegiate success laid the foundation for a remarkable NHL career.

He ranks fourth among all former UND players in NHL games, second in goals, first in assists, and second in points.

Looking Ahead

The return of Jonathan Toews to the NHL, particularly with the Winnipeg Jets, is a significant moment for both the player and the team. As the Jets continue their pursuit of success, Toews’ experience and leadership could prove invaluable.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Toews steps back onto the ice, eager to see how his presence will impact the Jets’ performance in the upcoming season. The move represents not only a personal comeback for Toews but also a potential turning point for the Jets as they aim to build on their recent progress.

As July 1 approaches, the anticipation continues to build, marking a new chapter in the storied career of one of hockey’s most respected figures.
