Voluntary Recall Issued for Inaccurate Glucose Sensors by Abbott

A voluntary recall has been initiated for specific glucose sensors following reports of potentially inaccurate readings. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified that certain models of the FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus Sensor may display incorrect low-glucose levels, which could lead to improper treatment for individuals living with diabetes.

As outlined by the FDA, this issue has prompted significant concern, particularly as Abbott Diabetes Care became aware of seven fatalities and approximately 736 serious injuries associated with these devices. The situation escalated, and as of January 7, 2026, the number of reported serious injuries has risen to 860. In response, Abbott recommended the removal of these sensors from the market in an early alert issued in December 2025.
