Oklahoma City Thunder’s Nikola Topic Begins Chemotherapy Treatment
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic has commenced chemotherapy treatment following a diagnosis of testicular cancer. Sam Presti, the team’s general manager, shared the news with reporters on Thursday, emphasizing the medical team’s optimistic outlook for Topic’s recovery. The 20-year-old Serbian player was selected as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but did not play last season due to a torn ACL injury.
Medical Procedure and Support from the Thunder
In early October 2023, Topic underwent a biopsy at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. After receiving the biopsy results, he requested that the Thunder keep his diagnosis private until he began chemotherapy. Presti noted that doctors are “extremely positive” about Topic’s long-term prognosis.
While undergoing treatment, Topic has managed to maintain a workout routine. Nonetheless, Presti indicated that there is currently no set timetable for when Topic might make his NBA debut. “Our only expectations for him are to focus on this,” Presti remarked. “This is his most important priority. He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any time length or expectations on that obviously. He has our total support, encouragement, and love.”
Team’s Commitment to Topic’s Recovery
Topic’s health and well-being are the Thunder’s primary concerns at this time. The organization has rallied around him since the diagnosis, reflecting a commitment to not only his athletic career but also to his personal health journey. As he navigates this challenging period, the support from teammates, coaching staff, and fans remains strong.
As the situation develops, the Thunder will continue to prioritize Topic’s recovery, ensuring he has the necessary resources to focus on his health. The basketball community is united in wishing him a successful treatment and a full return to the court when the time is right.
