As September approaches, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is encouraging individuals to participate in community Out of the Darkness Walks as part of Suicide Prevention Month. These walks, organized by local chapters of AFSP, will take place throughout the month and into the fall, aiming to foster community support and raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Community Support and Healing

The Out of the Darkness Walks serve as a platform for participants to connect, share their stories, and support one another. Ray Burke, who tragically lost his son, a U.S. Navy submariner, to suicide, described the event as akin to a family reunion. “You have all these people coming from different walks of life… and you’re all coming together with one common goal,” Burke said. “You’re there to provide comfort, love, and compassion to each other.”

Bob Gebbia, the CEO of AFSP, emphasized the organization’s mission of providing hope and saving lives. He stated, “Our mission of giving hope to those affected by suicide and saving lives comes to life by people showing up for each other and learning how to offer support.” Gebbia invites everyone to join a walk near them to contribute to the cause.

Raising Awareness and Funds

The fundraising efforts associated with these walks are crucial for advancing suicide prevention initiatives. AFSP allocates funds to scientific research, public policy advocacy, and educational programs that enhance public understanding of mental health and suicide prevention. Through these efforts, the organization seeks to equip community members with knowledge and tools to help those in need.

In addition to the walks, September will feature various events and opportunities to learn about suicide prevention, ensuring that support is available for individuals and families affected by this pressing issue.

For anyone struggling or in crisis, immediate and confidential assistance is accessible through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Individuals can call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org for support.

As communities come together this September, the AFSP highlights the importance of unity in addressing mental health challenges and fostering a supportive environment for all.
