In a proactive effort to safeguard public health as winter approaches, the Imperial County Public Health Department (ICPHD) has initiated its 2025-2026 flu vaccination campaign. This launch took place on September 30 at Imperial Valley College, where a vaccination clinic provided free flu vaccines to students, faculty, and staff. The event underscores the importance of early vaccination, particularly as holiday gatherings are expected to increase flu transmission.

Dr. Stephen Munday, the County Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated early. “The Public Health Department strongly encourages all individuals who are eligible to get their flu vaccine early to help protect themselves and their loved ones,” he stated. He highlighted that flu activity typically rises during the holiday season when people gather more frequently.

Rising Concerns About Flu Severity

The urgent push for vaccinations comes on the heels of concerning national data. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 2024-2025 influenza season was noted as the most severe since 2017-2018. This season saw elevated levels of outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and flu-related fatalities, indicating a significant public health concern.

Flu, a contagious respiratory illness, can lead to symptoms that range from mild to severe, including fever, cough, fatigue, and muscle aches. While anyone can contract the flu, certain groups face higher risks for serious complications, including adults aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions. Health officials stress that receiving an annual flu shot is the most effective method for preventing the illness and its potential severity.

Accessing the Flu Vaccine

For individuals who were unable to attend the college clinic, the flu vaccine remains accessible. The ICPHD offers the vaccine for $2 by appointment or on a walk-in basis during regular business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additionally, the department plans to organize more community clinics at various locations throughout the county, with details to be shared on the Public Health Department’s website and social media channels.

Residents can also seek vaccinations at most local doctors’ offices and pharmacies and are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider directly for availability. Furthermore, the CDC advises staying current on vaccinations for other respiratory illnesses, such as COVID-19 and RSV, to ensure comprehensive protection.

For those interested in receiving the flu vaccine at the ICPHD, appointments can be scheduled online at west.phims.org/imperial/scheduling/selfscheduling.aspx or by calling 442-265-1444. For vaccinations elsewhere, individuals can reach out to their medical providers or pharmacists or visit myturn.ca.gov for more information.
