The acclaimed South African extreme sports drama, “Spinners,” is set to return for its second season, continuing the captivating story that has resonated with audiences. Co-produced by the streaming service Showmax and Canal+, the new season reunites the original creators, writers, and cast, further solidifying its place in the realm of international television.

Production Details and Creative Team

Season 2 of “Spinners” was filmed on location in Cape Town, under the guidance of showrunner and co-creator Benjamin Hoffman. Director Jaco Bouwer, known for his award-winning film “Gaia,” returns to helm the new episodes. The writing team also remains intact, with Matthew Jankes and Sean Steinberg crafting the scripts that promise to deliver more gripping narratives.

Production responsibilities are shared by Joachim Landau from Federation Middle East Africa & Caribbean and Ramadan Suleman, who co-produces through his South African company, Natives at Large. The upcoming season is expected to showcase the collaborative efforts between Canal+ and Showtime, the streaming service of MultiChoice, which currently operates across 50 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

A Look Back at Season 1

Season 1 of “Spinners” made significant history by being the first African series to participate in the main competition at Canneseries in March 2023. The series was well-received, earning accolades at various festivals including the Dakar Series and the Shanghai TV Festival, while also securing three nominations at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA).

The first season followed 17-year-old Ethan, portrayed by Cantona James, as he sought to escape the violent cycle of gang life through spinning, a thrilling South African motorsport. Season 2 picks up two years later, with Ethan and his friends now emerging as stars in the spinning world. Yet, their newfound fame is threatened when a brutal ambush by Ethan’s former gang disrupts their lives.

The gripping synopsis hints at escalating tensions: “Fame, love, and happiness finally seem within reach—until a brutal ambush, orchestrated by Ethan’s old gang, shatters their peace. Desperate, Ethan turns to the Maseko clan for help but their protection comes at a heavy cost.”

Returning and New Cast Members

Returning to their roles, Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas will be joined by Brendon Daniels, recognized for his role in “White Lies,” and Dillon Windvogel, known for “Blood & Water.” Exciting cameo appearances are expected, including top spinner Kayla Olifant, recently featured in the National Geographic series “David Blaine: Do Not Attempt.” New cast members include Clementine Mosimane, Mondli Makhoba, rising star Luyanda Zwane, and Aphiwe Mkefe.

The production of “Spinners” season 2 aligns with Canal+’s strategy to enhance its portfolio of original series in Africa. The company aims to produce eight new shows annually, showcasing diverse talent from across the continent. Since 2018, Canal+ has produced a total of 35 series featuring African talent from 11 countries, including notable titles such as “Invisibles,” “Agent,” and “Cacao.”

As anticipation builds for the second season, the creative team is set to unveil a first look at Mipcom, the international content market, promising more drama and excitement that fans have come to love.
