Patrick Mahomes Reflects on Father’s DWI Arrest Ahead of Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes recently shared the emotional toll of his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., facing a DWI arrest just before the 2024 Super Bowl. During the third episode of ESPN’s series The Kingdom, which aired on August 20, 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback opened up about the significant impact the incident had on him and his family.
The arrest, which marked Pat Sr.’s third DWI charge, came as a shock to many, especially in the lead-up to such a high-profile event. Patrick, 29, explained how he was forced to confront questions from the media, saying, “It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it.” He noted that his father’s actions affected him deeply, stating, “I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can’t keep doing the same things.”
Pat Mahomes Sr., 55, expressed similar feelings about the public nature of his arrest. “For [my son] to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life,” he acknowledged. The former Major League Baseball player took responsibility for how his actions reflected on his family, stating, “I called [Patrick] right after and I told him, I said, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.’”
The incident had a ripple effect on the family, prompting Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, to comment that it “finally” made Pat Sr. realize that his children and grandchildren “are watching.” The couple has three young children: Sterling, 3, Bronze, 2, and Golden, 7 months.
Pat Sr. admitted that he had previously dismissed concerns about his drinking habits, saying, “It was just something that I’ve always done… I went out, partied a little bit, wasn’t always where I was supposed to be.” He acknowledged the privileges he had taken advantage of in the sports world and the consequences of his behavior.
In early February 2024, just a week before the Super Bowl, Pat Sr. was arrested in Tyler, Texas, on DWI charges. He was quickly released after posting a $10,000 bond. Following the incident, police footage obtained by TMZ showed Pat Sr. pleading with officers, asserting, “My son is getting ready to play in the f***ing Super Bowl. I am not drunk, I promise you.” He further insisted on finding a way to avoid the charges, saying, “Dude, seriously? We don’t have stars from around here. I can get somebody to drive me, but we can’t have this.”
In August 2024, Pat Sr. pleaded guilty to the DWI felony charge and served a 10-day sentence in county jail later that fall. As the events unfolded leading to Super Bowl LVIII, Patrick addressed his father’s situation briefly during a press conference, saying, “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is.” He emphasized the personal nature of the matter, stating, “It’s a family matter, so I will just keep it to the family.”
The emotional impact of this incident on both Patrick and Pat Mahomes Sr. underscores the complex relationship between personal struggles and public life, especially in the spotlight of major sporting events. As the season progresses, the Mahomes family continues to navigate the challenges that come with fame and accountability.
