Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Fashion and Life After Divorce

Nicole Kidman recently shared insights into her fashion choices and personal life following her split from husband Keith Urban, which was confirmed on September 29, 2023. In an interview with Vogue for the magazine’s November issue, Kidman described her sartorial selections as a form of expression, stating, “Sometimes it’s armor.”
The actress, now 58, elaborated on how her outfits reflect her mood, ranging from playful to androgynous. While attending the Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week on October 6, she opted for a classic look featuring a white blouse and blue jeans. This appearance marked her debut as the brand’s ambassador, a new chapter amidst her recent personal changes.
Fashion as Expression
Kidman views fashion as an integral part of her artistic identity, referring to it as “a parallel artistic life.” In the interview, she recalled a significant moment in 1999 when she collaborated with photographer Steven Meisel for Vogue. They recreated portraits by John Singer Sargent, inspired by her role in the film The Portrait of a Lady. “At first I was like, ‘I don’t like looking at myself,’” Kidman said, reflecting on the experience. “He was like, ‘You have to.’” This moment helped her gain a new perspective on self-image, which she described as cathartic.
The actress also addressed her views on vanity and authenticity in the entertainment industry. Kidman expressed that she does not mind being photographed without makeup and embraces the natural changes in her skin, especially during emotional scenes. “I love flaws in the skin and I love real tears,” she noted, emphasizing her commitment to realism in her performances.
A New Chapter
Kidman’s recent divorce from Urban came after nearly two decades of marriage, with the couple sharing two daughters, Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14. Citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, Kidman is navigating this transformative period in her life.
In a previous interview with Allure in May, she candidly discussed the challenges of aging and the existential questions that arise with it. “I’ve always been a future person, and suddenly you go, ‘Oh.’ It’s coming to terms with the idea that you have no control over the future,” Kidman reflected.
As she continues to adapt to her new single status, Kidman remains focused on her career and personal growth. Her journey illustrates the complexity of balancing public life with personal challenges, highlighting her resilience in the face of change.
