Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have officially reunited for the highly anticipated sequel, Practical Magic 2, nearly 30 years after they first captivated audiences with their enchanting performances. On October 13, 2023, Kidman shared a video on Instagram showcasing the two actresses embracing in a mock graveyard, marking the beginning of production for the film. “The witches are back. Owens sisters’ first day on set! #PracticalMagic,” the 58-year-old actress wrote in her post.

The original 1998 film, adapted from Alice Hoffman’s novel, follows sisters Gillian (Kidman) and Sally Owens (Bullock) as they navigate the challenges of a mystical lineage burdened by a family curse that causes the men they love to perish. Over the years, the film has gained a devoted cult following. The sequel is set to be released on September 18, 2026, although specific plot details remain largely undisclosed. Industry insiders indicate that the storyline may draw from additional novels in Hoffman’s Practical Magic series.

Returning Cast and New Faces

Joining Kidman and Bullock in their return are Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, who will reprise their beloved roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, respectively. The production will also introduce fresh talent, including Lee Pace (known for Bodies Bodies Bodies), Joey King, Maisie Williams (of Game of Thrones fame), Xolo Maridueña (from Blue Beetle), and Solly McLeod.

One notable absence from the original cast will be Evan Rachel Wood, who played Sally’s older daughter, Kylie Owens. Wood revealed through her Instagram Stories that she had not been invited to reprise her role. “I was not asked to come back and be in the Practical Magic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting,” the 37-year-old actress stated. “It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”

Creative Team and Expectations

In a recent interview with Variety, Kidman expressed her and Bullock’s longstanding desire to create a sequel. “When we were making it, we definitely did,” she remarked. “We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.”

Director Susanne Bier also conveyed her enthusiasm for the project in a statement to The Daily Mail, stating, “Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet, and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world. We are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly, and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story.”

As anticipation builds for Practical Magic 2, fans are eager to see how the beloved characters evolve and what new challenges they will face in the sequel. With a blend of returning favorites and fresh faces, the film promises to be a captivating continuation of the Owens sisters’ magical journey.
