Medan and Neon Collaborate for U.S. Release of Panahi’s Award-Winning Film

Film production and finance company, Medan, has announced a partnership with Neon to co-finance the U.S. theatrical release of Jafar Panahi’s acclaimed film, It Was Just an Accident. The film, which won the prestigious Palme d’Or, is set to begin its release in New York on October 15, 2023, followed by a screening in Los Angeles on October 17, 2023. A nationwide rollout is expected to follow shortly thereafter.
This thriller, which explores the haunting experiences of former political prisoners as they confront their past and their former captor, has also been selected as France’s official submission for the Best International Feature category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film is both written and directed by Panahi, alongside producer Philippe Martin.

“It Was Just an Accident” is Panahi’s first film since being released from prison in Iran.
The film has garnered multiple awards, including not only the Palme d’Or but also the Sydney Award for Best Film at the Sydney International Film Festival. Panahi has received various accolades this season, including the Silver Medallion Tribute for Director at the Telluride Film Festival and a Special Tribute Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In addition to its festival success, the film was screened at Beyond Fest and the New York Film Festival, along with an appearance at the London Film Festival. Looking ahead, Panahi will be honored with the Icon Award at the Middleburg Film Festival and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Festival.
