Kingsley Ben-Adir and Archie Madekwe Star in New Film ‘The Arrival’

Filming has concluded for The Arrival, the debut feature directed by Bijan Sheibani, known for his work in theatre. The project was shot in London and features a notable cast, including Kingsley Ben-Adir from *Bob Marley: One Love*, Archie Madekwe of *Lurker*, Joanna Scanlan from *After Love*, and Alex Descas from *Let the Sunshine In*.
Based on Sheibani’s acclaimed play, the film is described as a “gut-wrenching depiction of identity, obsession and betrayal.” The storyline follows the reunion of two long-lost brothers, Raheem (played by Madekwe) and Tom (portrayed by Ben-Adir), who reconnect in adulthood. Tom, the elder brother, was adopted as an infant, and the film explores the complexities of their first encounter and the unsettling truths about their family history.
The narrative delves into the brothers’ journey as they attempt to reconcile their shared history while facing challenges stemming from decisions made by their parents, played by Scanlan and Descas, three decades earlier.
Bijan Sheibani’s Vision
Bijan Sheibani, an Olivier Award-winning director, wrote the screenplay for The Arrival. His recent theatre work includes *Till the Stars Come Down*, which received acclaim during its run at the National Theatre before transferring to the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Sheibani has also contributed to television, having written multiple episodes for Netflix’s *One Day*. His theatre directing credits include notable works such as *Dance Nation* at the Almeida Theatre and *Barber Shop Chronicles* at the National Theatre.
The film was developed in collaboration with Film4 and DMC Film, alongside House Productions, which co-produced the project. Co-financing came from Film4 and the BFI, with Cornerstone handling worldwide sales.
Produced by Tessa Ross (*Conclave*), Juliette Howell (*Brexit: The Uncivil War*), and Theo Barrowclough (*Scrapper*), the film also sees contributions from Nell Green as a producer. Executive producers include David Kimbangi for Film4 and Ama Ampadu for the BFI.
The filming took place across various locations in the UK during the summer of 2023.
Industry Impact and Expectations
Ama Ampadu, Senior Production and Development Executive at the BFI, expressed enthusiasm for Sheibani’s vision. “In The Arrival, Bijan Sheibani is bringing his unique voice and style to create a film that deftly explores issues of identity and roads not taken,” she stated. Ampadu highlighted the collaboration between Sheibani and producer Theo Barrowclough, noting the impressive team and cast led by Madekwe and Ben-Adir.
As anticipation builds for the film’s release, The Arrival promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of familial ties and personal identity, marking an exciting chapter for Sheibani as he transitions from stage to screen.
