Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper: Friendship Evolving Since ‘Biggest Loser’

The friendship between trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, forged on the set of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, has evolved significantly since the show first premiered in 2004. While both trainers gained fame for their roles in the weight-loss competition, their offscreen relationship has faced challenges and has become increasingly distant over the years.
The Biggest Loser captivated audiences by showcasing contestants competing to lose weight over a 30-week period. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, drawing millions of viewers who tuned in to see Michaels and Harper guide participants through intense workouts and nutrition plans. Despite their on-screen camaraderie, the trainers have revealed a more complicated dynamic off the set.
Michaels joined the show for its initial two seasons before leaving, only to return briefly in 2007. Harper, on the other hand, remained a staple throughout the series, ultimately becoming the host after Alison Sweeney stepped down. Critics later scrutinized the show for allegedly promoting unhealthy weight loss methods, which contributed to the departure of both trainers at various points.
In 2011, Michaels officially left the series, citing “fundamental differences” with the producers. She expressed concern that the show’s portrayal of her contributed to a negative public perception of her character. “You saw none of the relationships, none of the bonds that I build with my clients,” she stated, lamenting that it led to millions having a “warped negative perception” of her.
Despite their history, Michaels and Harper’s friendship has not flourished outside the show. In a 2020 interview with Watch What Happens Live, Harper mentioned he was excited about working with new trainers, subtly indicating a lack of ongoing contact with Michaels. Similarly, Michaels confirmed that she had not been in touch with Harper following his heart attack in 2017.
The shift in their relationship was further highlighted in the August 2025 docuseries Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser. Harper reflected on their past, noting, “After I had my heart attack, she’s the one person I never heard from. That to me spoke volumes.” His comments underscore the distance that has grown between them, despite their once-close working relationship.
Michaels also weighed in on Harper’s health issues, expressing concern over his lifestyle choices at the time. “Knowing a little bit about Bob, I know that he does have a family history of it,” she shared on E! Daily Pop, referring to his family’s history of heart disease. “Personally, I’m not pro-Paleo,” she stated, emphasizing her concern for his health and well-being.
The trainers’ differing views on health and wellness also surfaced during public discussions about body image and self-acceptance. In 2020, Michaels sparked controversy by commenting on singer Lizzo’s weight, suggesting that celebrating her music should not overshadow concerns about her health. Harper, in contrast, chose to remain neutral, stating, “I could never even think where she comes from. It’s none of my business.”
As their paths diverge, the friendship between Michaels and Harper serves as a reminder of the often-complex nature of relationships forged in the spotlight. While both have moved on to new ventures, their history on The Biggest Loser continues to echo in their interactions and public statements.
