James Gunn, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, has teased the potential return of Xolo Maridueña’s character, Blue Beetle, in the upcoming season of Peacemaker. This announcement comes as part of the broader transition for DC following the conclusion of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) series of films, which saw its final releases in 2023.

In a series of recent statements, Gunn has indicated that while Blue Beetle was initially produced as a standalone film, it remains open to inclusion in the newly established DC Universe (DCU). “You know, I won’t say you’re not in luck,” Gunn remarked during an interview with IMDb, referring to the character’s potential involvement in the second season of Peacemaker.

Transitioning from DCEU to DCU

The DCEU underwent significant changes in 2023, with films such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom marking the end of an era. Following this, Gunn and Safran began to lay the groundwork for a rebooted DCU, starting with projects like Creature Commandos.

Despite Gunn’s assertion that Blue Beetle is “totally disconnected” from the DCEU, he confirmed that Jaime Reyes could be integrated into the new narrative framework. “We’re using some actors from the past. We’re not using other actors from the past,” Gunn explained. He emphasized that all future projects would maintain continuity, stating, “everything from Superman forward will be connected and consistent.”

Maridueña has already confirmed his involvement in a new animated series, where he will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes. “We’re hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year,” he shared in a recent interview.

Future Prospects for Blue Beetle

The excitement surrounding the revival of Blue Beetle reflects a growing interest in diverse characters within the superhero genre. Gunn, who previously referred to Blue Beetle as “the first DCU character,” has laid out ambitious plans for Jaime’s role moving forward. Maridueña noted, “I don’t want to walk in while the chef is doing his thing. But I can say that once they’re finished with this three-course meal, I’m ready.”

In addition to Maridueña, other familiar faces from the DCEU are expected to return in the new DCU. Notable actors include Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee as A.R.G.U.S. agents Emilia Harcourt and John Economos, and Sean Gunn as Weasel, all of whom appeared in The Suicide Squad (2021).

As fans anticipate the developments from Gunn’s creative team, they express their hopes for Blue Beetle’s expanded role in the DCU. With a growing roster of characters and potential storylines, the future looks promising for the superhero franchise.
