Heart, the iconic rock band fronted by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, captivated audiences during their highly anticipated concert at the Allentown Fair on September 27, 2023. This performance marked a significant return after last year’s show was canceled due to Ann Wilson’s health concerns. Fans who had held onto their memorabilia found their loyalty rewarded with a powerful 1 hour and 45 minute set that showcased the band’s enduring talent and stage presence.

From the moment the band opened with “Bebe Le Strange,” Heart commanded the night. Ann Wilson, at 75, demonstrated an impressive vigor, performing predominantly while standing, a contrast to her recent seated appearances. Her commanding stage presence evoked a sense of royalty, especially as she leaned on a stool during the concert, connecting with the audience. “…So taste our medicine, and I hope you like it; we’re Heart,” she declared, igniting cheers from the audience.

Heart’s journey began in the early 1970s in Seattle, where they emerged as pioneers in a male-dominated rock landscape with albums like “Dreamboat Annie” and “Little Queen.” As part of the “Royal Flush Tour,” they were supported by a talented lineup including Ryan Wariner and Ryan Waters on guitars, Paul Moak on keys and rhythm guitar, Tony Lucido on bass, and Sean Lane on drums. This collaboration honored the band’s legacy while delivering an exhilarating performance.

The harmonies in songs like “Little Queen” were striking, and the sound quality was impeccable, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the nuances of Heart’s music. Ann humorously engaged the crowd, saying, “Come on in and take your seats,” as a security guard placed roses from a fan next to her.

One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of “These Dreams,” where Nancy’s acoustic guitar added a tender touch, complemented by Ann’s powerful vocals. The energy escalated with “Crazy on You,” evoking memories of its original release in 1977. Ann Wilson reminded the audience, “Heart is a band of two natures. This is a rock … band, and we also do poetic ballads,” before transitioning into the poignant “Dog and Butterfly” and a medley featuring Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California.”

Nancy Wilson shared a touching story about her encounter with the late Eddie Van Halen, recalling that he had once praised her guitar skills without qualifying it with, “for a girl.” This anecdote set the stage for her heartfelt tribute, “For Edward,” showcasing her emotional connection to the music.

The concert reached a crescendo with a psychedelic drum solo that led into “Magic Man,” prompting the audience to dance. They continued with a cover of “You’re the Voice,” drawing in a larger crowd. A beautifully executed bass solo set the tone for a mashup of “Straight On” and David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

The highlight of the night was the rendition of “Alone,” which began with Moak’s acoustic guitar accompanying Ann’s vocals before the full band joined in, delivering a powerful version that blended into “What About Love.” The set concluded with “Barracuda,” where both guitarists delivered electrifying solos, showcasing their exceptional skills and the band’s chemistry.

“I’ve seen many concerts over my years, but none have compared to the live vocals of Ann Wilson,” remarked an attendee, reflecting the sentiment of many in the audience. Ann Wilson’s powerful voice has paved the way for female rock musicians, and the concert underscored the impact of Heart’s legacy.

As the night drew to a close, Ann Wilson aptly stated, “Time flies when you’re doing rock and roll,” encapsulating the essence of a concert that felt like a triumphant return for both the band and their fans. For the audience in Allentown, the performance was not just a concert; it was a celebration of rock history and a testament to Heart’s enduring legacy.
