Duffer Brothers Leave Netflix for Four-Year Deal with Paramount

Brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, acclaimed creators of the hit series “Stranger Things,” have signed a significant four-year deal with Paramount Pictures. This agreement marks a transition from their current association with Netflix and will focus on developing feature films, television shows, and streaming content. The partnership is set to begin once their existing contract with Netflix concludes in April 2026.
In a joint statement, the Duffers expressed their enthusiasm about joining Paramount, describing it as “the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.” They emphasized their excitement about collaborating with Cindy Holland, who is now the head of streaming at Paramount and was instrumental in greenlighting “Stranger Things” during its initial stages. The brothers also mentioned Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television, as a key ally in their journey, reflecting on their early successes together.
The upcoming projects will be produced under their banner, Upside Down Pictures, which they co-lead with their producing partner, Hilary Leavitt. The deal aims to emphasize “ambitious” and “large-scale theatrical” projects, allowing the Duffers to explore new creative avenues. Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein of Paramount expressed their eagerness to welcome the brothers into the fold, highlighting their unique ability to craft culturally impactful stories.
“We are thrilled that the incomparable Duffer Brothers are joining our Paramount family,” said Greenstein. The collaboration aims to unify Paramount’s film, television, and streaming sectors, enabling the Duffers to leverage the full potential of these platforms to create compelling narratives.
This news follows the recent anticipation surrounding the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things,” which continues to captivate audiences globally. The Duffers reaffirmed their commitment to the series, stating they would remain involved in its development, even post-Netflix. They acknowledged the support and creative freedom provided by Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and Peter Friedlander during their decade-long tenure at Netflix.
“Our time at Netflix has been incredible,” the Duffers noted. “They have given us the kind of creative freedom and support that artists dream of but so rarely receive.” They expressed excitement about continuing their collaboration with Netflix on upcoming projects, including “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” and “The Boroughs.”
As the Duffers embark on this new chapter with Paramount, they remain dedicated to expanding the “Stranger Things” universe beyond Hawkins, promising more captivating stories for fans in the years to come.
