Accidentally dropping an Apple AirPods Pro 2 charging case into a water bowl may seem like a disaster, but one user discovered a way to salvage the situation and save approximately $100. The incident, which occurred during a routine post-run routine, highlights both the risks of everyday technology use and practical recovery methods for water-damaged devices.

What Happened

While untangling a running vest, the charging case fell into a dog’s water bowl, causing panic for the user. Although the earbuds remained safely in the user’s ears, the case was submerged for about ten seconds, allowing water to potentially seep into critical components. A quick search for recovery methods revealed a common suggestion: placing the case in a bowl with silica gel packets. However, the user quickly realized that these packets are often elusive in a busy household and decided on a different approach.

Reviving the AirPods Case

The first step in the recovery process involved thoroughly drying the charging case using a microfiber cloth. The user focused on the interior, where the AirPods are housed, and utilized a cotton bud to ensure that moisture was removed from the charging point. After drying the case, the user placed it into a bowl of rice, a popular method for absorbing moisture.

During the waiting period, the user researched Apple’s policy regarding replacement parts. Fortunately, Apple offers individual replacements for both charging cases and AirPods, which would cost around $100, significantly less than purchasing a new set of AirPods Pro 2. For users with Apple Care, this replacement cost is even lower.

After a few hours, the user retrieved the case, using a small brush designed for cleaning to remove rice grains from the hinge. To the user’s relief, the case was still functional, indicated by a red charging light, although it needed to be charged.

In the days following the incident, the AirPods case continued to work without issues, successfully charging the earbuds. Reflecting on the experience, the user noted that waiting to test the device likely allowed sufficient time for the internal components to dry, a critical step in preventing further damage.

It’s important to note that Apple does not recommend submerging its headphones in water or attempting to dry them with rice. Nonetheless, this incident offers insight into the potential for recovery after accidental water exposure and the importance of quick, informed actions.

This experience serves as a reminder to all technology users about the fragility of electronic devices and the value of quick problem-solving. While accidents may happen, knowing how to effectively respond can save both time and money.
