The beloved film Clueless is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of exciting collaborations featuring popular toy brands. Released in 1995, the coming-of-age comedy not only left a mark on pop culture but also continues to resonate with fans today. As part of the anniversary celebrations, Mattel has unveiled a collection of Barbie dolls representing the film’s main characters, Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash, respectively.
On Thursday, Mattel announced the release of these dolls, showcasing Cher and Dionne in their iconic plaid outfits from the film’s opening scene. “Are we totally buggin’ or is it already the 30th anniversary of Clueless?” the brand quipped on Instagram. Each Barbie doll retails for $60 and is currently available for preorder.
Expanding the Collection
In an effort to engage a new generation of fans, Mattel is also launching a Fisher-Price Little People Collection featuring the character Tai Frasier, played by the late Brittany Murphy. This three-toy set is priced at $27. Additionally, fans can look forward to themed merchandise including Clueless-inspired Uno cards and a Polly Pocket compact that features Murphy’s character.
The iconic duo of Cher and Dionne is also being celebrated by American Girl, which is offering outfits for 18-inch dolls that mirror the film’s signature styles. Each outfit costs $80. Cher’s ensemble includes a yellow and navy plaid jacket, matching skirt, and accessories like a toy cell phone with a retractable antenna. Dionne’s outfit features her distinctive black and white plaid jacket with a large white hat adorned with a red flower, as well as her own play cellphone.
Legacy and Future of Clueless
The anniversary celebrations come at a time when a sequel to Clueless is reportedly in development, reigniting interest in the film. The original movie not only introduced memorable phrases like “As If” and “Whatever!” but also featured a talented cast that included Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison.
Originally inspired by Jane Austen’s classic Emma, the film paved the way for a spin-off television series in 1996. Although the series did not include Rudd and Silverstone, it continued to explore the dynamics of teenage life.
As Clueless marks this significant milestone, it remains a cultural touchstone that continues to inspire new collaborations and a sense of nostalgia for fans old and new. With its latest offerings, Mattel and American Girl aim to solidify the film’s legacy in the hearts of audiences worldwide.
