CBS’s Sheriff Country Surges in Ratings After S.W.A.T. Cancellation
The cancellation of CBS’s action drama series S.W.A.T. has paved the way for its replacement, Sheriff Country, which is experiencing remarkable viewership growth. Following the series finale of S.W.A.T. in May 2023, the new show debuted in the same time slot, quickly capturing the attention of audiences.
Since its premiere on October 17, 2025, Sheriff Country has recorded seven consecutive weeks of increasing viewership. According to Nielsen data, the show attracts approximately 6.24 million viewers per episode, showing an impressive 11% increase compared to the last season of S.W.A.T. in the same time slot. In terms of broader audience engagement, the first episodes have garnered a total of 11.3 million viewers within the first 35 days, ranking it as the second most popular new show in that period, just behind the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue.
The increase in viewership is even more notable when considering multi-platform engagement, where Sheriff Country has achieved a 63% rise compared to S.W.A.T.. This growth reflects a strong interest in the new series, which focuses on the character of Sheriff Mickey Fox, portrayed by Morena Baccarin. The show follows Mickey as she navigates the challenges of law enforcement in the small town of Edgewater, while also dealing with personal complexities, including her relationship with her ex-con father.
The ensemble cast includes talents such as Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver, Matt Lauria, and W. Earl Brown. The series is set to take a hiatus after its upcoming episode on December 19, offering audiences the opportunity to catch up on this exciting new addition to CBS’s lineup.
While S.W.A.T. concluded, the franchise is far from over. A new spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles is currently in production, aiming to continue the story with Shemar Moore reprising his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. The new series will introduce a younger cast and explore fresh narratives, reminiscent of the Top Gun: Maverick premise. Alongside Moore, actors Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit will return as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay and Commander Robert Hicks in the premiere episode.
As CBS capitalizes on the success of Sheriff Country, it remains to be seen how S.W.A.T. Exiles will find its place in the network’s future programming. The evolving landscape of television continues to highlight viewers’ shifting preferences and the potential for new stories to resonate with audiences. The ongoing developments within CBS’s procedural lineup reflect a dynamic approach to storytelling, ensuring that both legacy and new series can thrive in a competitive market.
