Beta Film Secures International Rights for Bosnian Series ‘Komar’

Beta Film has acquired the international distribution rights to the Bosnian mystery crime series “Komar,” which premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival one year ago. The series is produced by BH Telecom (BH Content Lab) with SCCA/Pro.ba acting as the executive producer. This marks the third collaboration between BH Telecom and Beta Film, following the successful series “I Know Your Soul” and “The Hollow.”
The eight-hour series adds to Beta’s expanding portfolio of premium shows from the Balkans, which includes notable titles such as “Operation Sabre,” a winner at both Canneseries and the Shanghai TV Festival. The Serbian series has recently aired on ARTE and received acclaim from critics, being described as a “masterful political thriller” by Spiegel and “a powerful and committed thriller” by Télérama.
Overview of “Komar” and Its Themes
“Komar” centers on Mersiha, whose boyfriend, Miki, disappears without a trace while traveling by bus through the Komar mountains.
As she and her best friend, Jasna, embark on a desperate search for him, other travelers discover they are stranded on a bus in an isolated area, cut off from civilization due to a lack of cellphone signal. The plot thickens as dark forces emerge, complicating their quest for answers.
The series is helmed by showrunner Timur Makarevic, with directing responsibilities shared between Vedran Rupic and Una Gunjak. The lead roles are portrayed by Lejla Hakalovic, Pia Vrdoljak, and Igor Skvarica.
Representation at Sarajevo Film Festival
At this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival, Beta Film is represented by Julia Schweiger, a senior executive at Beta’s Kids & YA division. Schweiger is participating in the Cinelink panel titled “From SKAM to SRAM: Youth Drama, Public Broadcasters, and the Power of Adaptation.” This highlights Beta’s commitment to promoting innovative storytelling in youth dramas and furthering international collaborations.
“Komar” not only showcases the growing talent in the Bosnian film industry but also signifies the increasing global interest in regional narratives. As Beta Film continues to expand its international offerings, “Komar” stands as a testament to the rich storytelling tradition emerging from the Balkans.
