Benson Boone performed a heartfelt cover of Sam Fender’s “Seventeen Going Under” during the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 15, 2023. This tribute came after Fender was forced to withdraw from the event due to a serious vocal cord issue. The U.K. artist had been slated to headline the festival alongside Boone and fellow performer Mark Ambor.
Fender announced on July 4 that he had been diagnosed with a “haemorrhage on one of [his] vocal cords” and was advised to rest for two weeks. In a candid statement, he expressed his frustration, saying, “This is incredibly frustrating as I have been so careful with my vocal health and this year so far has been the best of my career.” He emphasized the risks of performing, stating, “If I were to play at these next shows, I would risk causing lasting damage to my vocal cords.”
While no direct replacement artist was named to fill Fender’s slot, Boone stepped into a headliner role. Addressing the crowd, he shared his admiration for Fender, saying, “He’s an artist that I look up to and an artist I think is incredibly talented.” Boone humorously acknowledged the pressure of taking over, admitting he was “terrified” and had expected “a bunch of angry people” rather than supportive fans.
To honor Fender’s absence, Boone offered a rendition of “Seventeen Going Under,” aiming to connect with those who had come to see the original artist. “I really hope that the people who came to see Sam today can get just five percent out of this song,” he remarked. His performance resonated with the audience, showcasing not only his talent but also the spirit of camaraderie in the music community.
Fender’s latest album, People Watching, released in February 2023, followed his well-received album Seventeen Going Under. Regrettably, the release of People Watching was also marred by health issues, as Fender previously canceled several shows due to the same vocal cord condition. On December 17, 2022, he had informed fans, “I’ve had two separate ENT doctors say if I perform tonight, I’m risking lasting damage to my voice.”
Looking ahead, Fender is set to return to the stage on August 8, 2023, for a headline performance at Denmark’s Syd For Solen festival. As the music community rallies behind him, fans eagerly await his recovery and future performances. Boone’s tribute at the Montreux Jazz Festival not only highlighted his artistry but also underscored the enduring impact of Fender’s music on his peers and fans alike.
