Alanis Morissette’s Cut Cameo in Ryan Reynolds’ Just Friends Revealed
The 2005 romantic comedy Just Friends, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris, had a notable cameo that ultimately did not make the final cut. Director Roger Kumble recently discussed the reasons for this decision, shedding light on the film’s editing process as it approaches its 20th anniversary.
Kumble revealed in an interview with ScreenRant that the pacing of the film’s first act necessitated a tighter edit, stating, “We were just trying to move the film along.” The cameo role was performed by Alanis Morissette, the renowned singer-songwriter who was engaged to Reynolds during the film’s production. Although her scene was removed, it remains accessible in the special features section of the DVD, allowing fans to see her brief appearance.
Initially, the production team sought a star with a similar vibe to Morissette, but Reynolds suggested his fiancée for the role. Kumble fondly recalled Morissette’s time on set, describing her as “lovely” and noting that she baked cookies for the crew. Despite the scene being cut, Morissette was supportive of the decision and allowed it to be included among the deleted scenes.

The film grossed approximately 50.9 million USD at the box office and received a lackluster 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
