The UW-Madison Baja SAE team showcased their engineering prowess at the Backwoods Challenge, held at UW-Stout in October 2023. This competitive weekend brought together students from various institutions to engage in two main events: the Car Carry and the Endurance Race. The team brought a strong contingent, comprising 49 members, five alumni, and three vehicles named Dash-Two, Moodoo, and Senderella.

Participating in this event not only allowed the team members to test their technical skills but also fostered camaraderie among participants. Camping under the stars added to the experience, as students bonded over shared challenges and achievements. Throughout the weekend, the vehicles encountered several maintenance issues, providing valuable opportunities for both seasoned and new members to address repairs under pressure.

The rigorous environment of the Backwoods Challenge allowed the team to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to practical situations, reinforcing the importance of hands-on experience in engineering education.

Nick Wendt, a senior in Mechanical Engineering and the Baja SAE President, played a critical role in documenting the event and sharing insights into the team’s experience. His contributions included providing photographs and details about the competition, which helped highlight the achievements of the UW-Madison team.

As the team looks ahead to their next competition in spring 2024, they encourage those interested in following their journey to connect with them on social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram. The Backwoods Challenge served as an important milestone for the UW-Madison Baja SAE team, blending competition with education and community.

The event not only emphasized the technical skills of the participants but also showcased the spirit of teamwork and resilience that fuels the Baja SAE experience. As the team prepares for upcoming challenges, their commitment to learning and innovation remains steadfast.
