The University of Washington (UW) has begun sharing essential dates and events to assist families of incoming students as they prepare for the academic year. This initiative, part of the Family Orientation sessions held in July and August, aims to provide clarity on key milestones for both students and their families.

Orientation and Move-In Details

A critical component of the transition for new students is the Advising & Orientation (A&O) experience. Students must complete this program before they can register for classes. A&O sessions are scheduled throughout the summer and early autumn, combining a virtual program with an on-campus experience. Once students register through fyp.uw.edu, they will receive emails containing specific dates and instructions.

Residence hall move-in typically occurs just before classes begin in late September. For students involved in specific groups, such as the marching band, early move-in options may be available. Families are encouraged to contact Housing & Food Services for additional information regarding early move-in and associated fees.

Upcoming Events for Families

Dawg Daze, a week of welcoming events for new students, begins around the time of move-in. While the majority of these activities are tailored for students, there will be some family-oriented sessions as well. For comprehensive details on academic milestones, tuition deadlines, and university holidays, families can refer to the Dawg Dates & Deadlines calendar available on the Parents & Families website. This calendar outlines important dates for each quarter, including the start of classes, tuition due dates, and application deadlines.

Additionally, UW’s annual Family Weekend is set for October 24–25, 2025. Families will have the opportunity to participate in campus events on Friday and support the Huskies at the football game, along with a family tailgate on Saturday. Ticket sales for this event will commence on September 15, with invitations distributed via the Parent Insider newsletter.

Tuition billing cycles are also noteworthy. Students can expect their tuition bills to appear in MyUW approximately two weeks before classes commence. Scholarships and financial aid will be disbursed the Thursday prior to the first day of classes, with any excess funds being allocated to the student. Bills are due on the third Friday of the quarter and will detail separate line items for tuition and housing.

Families seeking easy access to the relevant information can visit official UW pages, which include resources on forms, billing, move-in logistics, and the Parent & Family Guide.

As new students embark on their academic journey, it is essential for families to encourage exploration, seek assistance when needed, and prioritize both academic success and personal wellbeing. Family support plays a significant role in this transitional phase, making a positive impact on students’ experiences at the University of Washington.
