Three engineering students from the University of Central Florida (UCF) have been selected for the Department of Defense (DOD) Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program. The recipients—Carlos Arteaga, Chance Brewer, and Jean-Philippe Perrault—will benefit from a comprehensive scholarship package that includes not only tuition coverage but also an annual stipend, a summer internship, and guaranteed employment with the DOD upon graduation.

The SMART program aims to cultivate a pool of skilled professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) who can address the nation’s security needs. Eligible candidates are required to commit to one year of employment with the DOD after completing their degrees.

Carlos Arteaga: Building on Experience

Carlos Arteaga is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in civil engineering and works as a geotechnical engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He applied for the SMART Scholarship program because it aligned with his commitment to technical excellence and national service. “The opportunity to contribute to national security while deepening my expertise made it an ideal fit,” Arteaga stated.

He recognizes the program’s integration of academic advancement with practical application, especially within the DOD’s infrastructure and research sectors. As a student on the non-thesis track, he plans to focus on gaining insights into decision-making processes within defense engineering. Arteaga believes that UCF’s rigorous curriculum has enhanced his ability to communicate complex concepts effectively, preparing him to contribute confidently to the DOD’s mission.

Chance Brewer: Aiming for Space Innovations

Another recipient, Chance Brewer, graduated in 2020 with a degree in mechanical engineering. His experience in the Putnam Lab, under the guidance of Professor Shawn Putnam, has positioned him well for his future work with the DOD. Brewer has collaborated on projects sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and will continue this research while focusing on thermal control technologies for space vehicles.

“My academic research on multifunctional materials is closely tied to my work with AFRL,” Brewer noted. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from UCF’s Office of Undergraduate Research and the Academic Advancement Programs office, which encouraged him to engage in research early in his academic career. Brewer hopes that his involvement with AFRL will allow him to innovate solutions that support both military and commercial applications in thermal management systems.

Jean-Philippe Perrault: Balancing Family and Career

Also a recipient of the SMART Scholarship, Jean-Philippe Perrault already serves as an engineering supervisor at the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD). He is pursuing a Ph.D. in industrial engineering while balancing his responsibilities as a father of five and community volunteer. The SMART Scholarship’s provision for designated study time during work hours has made it feasible for Perrault to continue his education.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in business administration, Perrault returned to UCF in Fall 2024 to advance his studies. His research focuses on developing a theoretical framework for integrating artificial intelligence technology into military training systems. Perrault aims to deepen his technical expertise through the SMART program, enhancing his understanding of how research translates into practical applications within the DOD.

“My goal is to develop leadership and project management skills that will enable me to contribute effectively to the defense community,” Perrault explained. He plans to maintain his role at NAWCTSD while fostering ongoing collaboration with UCF, emphasizing the significant impact the university has had on his professional development.

The achievements of Arteaga, Brewer, and Perrault not only highlight their individual talents but also showcase UCF’s commitment to fostering skilled professionals in critical fields. As they embark on this new chapter, these students exemplify the program’s mission to strengthen the workforce dedicated to meeting national security challenges.
