All students at Syracuse University are invited to apply for the prestigious Remembrance Scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year. This scholarship honors the memory of the 270 individuals who lost their lives in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Applications are open to those set to graduate in December 2026, May 2027, or the summer of 2027.

The deadline for applications is Friday, January 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST. The scholarship is among the highest honors available to Syracuse students, awarded based on leadership, creativity, and community impact. Scholars are expected to engage in meaningful service and promote initiatives aimed at combating hatred and extremism.

Who Can Apply for the Scholarship?

Eligible applicants must be undergraduate students in good academic standing at Syracuse University. Those interested can self-nominate for the scholarship, which is not based on financial need. A total of 35 scholars will be selected to receive a scholarship of $5,000 each. These scholars play a crucial role in educating the campus community about the tragic event, ensuring that the memories of the victims, including the 35 students associated with the university, are honored.

The motto of the Remembrance Scholars, “Look Back, Act Forward,” encapsulates the program’s focus on reflection and proactive engagement against violence and hatred.

Information Sessions Available

To assist potential applicants, Syracuse University will host information sessions detailing the scholarship and the application process. These sessions are scheduled for:

– **Tuesday, December 2** from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in MacNaughton Hall Room 201, Falk College of Sport
– **Wednesday, December 3** from 4 to 5 p.m. on Zoom (registration required)

Current Remembrance Scholars will share their experiences, from the application stage to their involvement in Remembrance Week. Students seeking accommodations for these sessions should contact Tamara Hamilton at [email protected].

For further inquiries, individuals can reach out to the Remembrance Scholarship team at [email protected]. As the application deadline approaches, Syracuse University encourages students to take part in this meaningful opportunity to reflect on history and contribute positively to the community.
