The new school year begins for many students in New Jersey and the Philadelphia suburbs on September 5, 2023, as families prepare for the return to classes. Store shelves have been cleared of back-to-school supplies, and excitement fills the air as students pack their bags with essential items for the year ahead.

Among the eager fourth graders, Sophie shared her preparation, stating, “I got two composition books.” Talia, who is starting seventh grade, highlighted her readiness with a math calculator. The enthusiasm is palpable as students make their way to school, dressed in new outfits that reflect their personalities. Eighth grader Braelyn Viola mentioned her new wardrobe, saying, “I bought baggy jeans and a few baggy shirts.” Meanwhile, Juliana Viola, an 11th grader, emphasized the importance of rest, adding, “I bought some new sleep clothes because you need to sleep well when life is getting a little stressful.”

While many embrace the fresh start, others wish for a few more days of summer. Fourth grader Luke expressed his reluctance, saying, “I’m crashing out. I’m mad.” Despite mixed feelings about the end of the break, many students agree that reuniting with friends is a highlight of returning to school. Sixth grader Fiona stated, “I like being with my friends.”

Words of Wisdom from Students

Before the first school bell rings, students offered valuable advice for a successful year. Luke advised, “Don’t go to the principal’s office,” while ninth grader Molly stressed the importance of hard work: “Try hard. If you don’t, then you’ll fail and have to take the grade again.” Kathy DeFeo from Havertown provided a reassuring perspective, saying, “Have fun. Don’t be scared. It will be OK.”

As the school year commences, the collective anticipation and advice from students reflect a blend of excitement and apprehension, marking another chapter in their educational journeys. Families across New Jersey and the Philadelphia suburbs stand ready to support their children as they navigate the challenges and joys of the upcoming year.
