A new chapter in higher education has begun with the launch of the Wileety Native American College at Sacramento State University. This initiative marks the first of its kind in California, aiming to provide an educational experience deeply rooted in Native American culture and tribal values. The college officially opened its doors on September 27, 2023, celebrating its inaugural cohort of 34 students during a gathering on campus.

Luke Wood, President of Sacramento State, and Annette Reed, the college’s dean of students, announced the establishment of the Wileety Native American College last fall at the State Capitol. The name “Wileety,” pronounced “Wuh-lehh-too,” derives from the Miwok language and signifies “to bloom, to be bright, to shine.” This symbolism reflects the college’s mission to cultivate students who will thrive and lead within their communities.

Focus on Career Readiness and Community Leadership

The Wileety Native American College emphasizes not only academic growth but also career readiness and leadership development. By integrating Native American traditions and governance into the curriculum, the college aims to prepare students to become changemakers in their communities. According to university officials, the college is open to students of all races and backgrounds who have an interest in learning about Native American life, history, and culture. This approach mirrors Sacramento State’s commitment to inclusivity, as seen in the establishment of the Black Honors College, which also accepts students from diverse backgrounds.

During the opening ceremony, Wood highlighted that approximately 25 tribal nations are represented among the first cohort of students, a figure that is expected to grow in subsequent years. Students interested in joining future cohorts must first apply for admission to Sacramento State. Following acceptance, they can submit applications for consideration to the Wileety Native American College.

As Sacramento State continues to expand its offerings and commitment to diversity, the launch of the Wileety Native American College stands as a significant milestone. This initiative not only enriches the university’s academic landscape but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of Native American culture among all students.

The establishment of this college is a testament to Sacramento State’s dedication to inclusive education and its ongoing efforts to serve the diverse communities of California.
