The North Platte Public Schools Foundation honored three distinguished alumni during its annual Evening of Excellence on March 15, 2024, at Venue 304. This year’s event, themed “Diamonds and Disco,” celebrated the achievements of Judge Barbara Houser, Judge Angie Schneider, and Melissa Poloncic, Ph.D. The celebration highlights the significant contributions of alumni to the community and their fields.

Alumni coordinator chair Paulette Stefka emphasized the importance of recognizing the district’s alumni, stating, “We have so many alumni that are beyond distinguished.” She noted that the event provides a platform for these individuals to share their stories and experiences with current students and community members. “It’s just a win-win for all of us,” Stefka added.

The selection of distinguished alumni involves a committee that evaluates applicants based on merit. Stefka expressed her delight at witnessing the reconnection of old acquaintances, which she believes reflects positively on the North Platte Public Schools.

Profiles of Honorees

Judge Barbara J. Houser, a 1972 graduate, returned to North Platte for the occasion after a brief visit to her childhood homes and high school. Originally from Scottsbluff, she moved to North Platte in second grade. Houser has had a long-standing interest in law, which began during her high school debate days. She currently serves as a trustee for the Boy Scout Settlement Trust, managing funds related to sexual abuse cases.

Judge Angie K. Schneider, also a judge in New Mexico, described this visit as a “special trip.” A graduate of 1987, Schneider practiced law for a decade before her appointment to the bench. She has always felt a calling to ensure justice and fairness for all individuals.

Melissa Poloncic was born in Omaha but moved to North Platte at the age of five and graduated from North Platte High School in 1988. As the current superintendent of Douglas County West Community Schools, she reflected on her positive experiences in the North Platte education system. “I had an excellent high school experience,” she stated, emphasizing the role of her educators in shaping her career path. Upon receiving the distinguished alumni title, she conveyed her humility, acknowledging the success of her classmates.

Recognizing Educators

In addition to honoring distinguished alumni, the North Platte Public Schools Foundation recognized exceptional educators during the event. Executive Director Terri Burchell highlighted the important role teachers play in the success of their students. “For the distinguished alumni, it starts with their teachers,” she noted.

The educators of the year were also announced, showcasing the dedication of staff members across various grade levels. The awards included:

– PreK through fifth grade employee of the year: Elizabeth Buhlke
– Sixth through twelfth grade employee of the year: Maria Cano
– Elementary teacher of the year: Stevie Reed
– Secondary teacher of the year: Tiffany Johnson
– Rookie teacher of the year: Clare Schinzel
– Administrator of the year: Veronica Gale

The Evening of Excellence not only served as a celebration of alumni success but also reinforced the strong community ties that North Platte Public Schools fosters, creating an environment where past and present students and educators can come together to inspire future generations.
