A new novel titled The Outlaw From Newville: A Game Warden Henry Glance Novel by Steven T. Callan delves into the dramatic intersection of crime and conservation. Set against the backdrop of Northern California, the story follows the lives of a game warden and a notorious poacher, exploring themes of greed, wildlife preservation, and justice.

The narrative unfolds with the marriage of Preston Radcliff and Molly Bryer on June 25, 1912, in Sacramento. They eventually settle in the quaint hamlet of Newville after a scenic journey through the foothills of Glenn County. Their son, Willie Radcliff, born four years later, emerges as a troubled character who disregards hunting regulations. Willie’s penchant for killing animals, particularly deer, out of season sets the stage for a dramatic conflict.

Willie’s reckless behavior attracts the attention of Henry Glance, a dedicated game warden residing in an old farmhouse west of Gridley. Glance, who honed his skills during his studies at Chico State, finds himself embroiled in Willie’s criminal enterprises, which are fueled by a substantial inheritance. The unfolding events eventually lead to significant consequences, including the destruction of a rare species and an international incident involving the former Soviet Union.

Convergence of Lives and Criminality

The novel is structured into two parts, with alternating chapters that highlight both Willie’s escalating greed and Glance’s strategic efforts as a game warden. As the story progresses, the paths of these two characters intersect in unexpected and dangerous ways, stretching from the local Butte County Jail to the far reaches of Eastern Russia.

Callan’s narrative is rich with procedural details, offering readers an inside look at Glance’s investigations with the Department of Fish and Game. The author’s experience as a former game warden for over thirty years lends authenticity to the story, as he skillfully illustrates the physical dangers that law enforcement officials face in the field.
