NDSU and Dickinson State Launch Innovative Pre-Pharmacy Program
North Dakota State University (NDSU) has joined forces with Dickinson State College to establish a new pre-pharmacy program designed to enhance educational opportunities for students in western North Dakota. This initiative, announced on October 29, 2023, marks a significant development as it provides a unique pathway for students pursuing careers in pharmacy.
The new program will allow students at Dickinson State to access the pre-pharmacy training traditionally offered at NDSU, which is the only institution in North Dakota with an accredited pharmacy program. This collaboration addresses the increasing demand for pharmacists in the region, highlighting a critical need for healthcare professionals in western North Dakota.
Amy Werremeyer, chair of NDSU’s Department of Pharmacy Practice, emphasized the importance of this partnership. She stated, “We’re providing coverage and making connections with people all across the state. We know that the health of North Dakotans is paramount for what pharmacists need to be focused on, and we’re here to help students do that.” This sentiment underscores the commitment both institutions share towards improving healthcare access in the state.
Beginning in the spring of 2024, students enrolled at Dickinson State will be able to participate in a three-year pre-pharmacy program. This will also include an accelerated pharmacy training program, allowing them to complete their education more efficiently. The initiative aims not only to bolster the number of qualified pharmacists in the state but also to create a more interconnected educational system between the two institutions.
This partnership is particularly timely, given the ongoing challenges in healthcare access in rural areas. By facilitating a local pathway to pharmacy education, NDSU and Dickinson State are taking proactive steps to ensure that future pharmacists are trained to meet the specific needs of their communities.
As the program unfolds, both universities expect to see a positive impact on local healthcare by equipping students with the necessary skills and training. This collaboration represents a promising advancement in pharmacy education, with the potential to shape the future of healthcare in North Dakota.
