Milwaukee’s vibrant cultural landscape will take center stage on October 30, 2023, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Center for 21st Century Studies (C21) hosts the State of the Humanities MKE panel discussion. Scheduled from 16:00 to 18:00 in Curtin Hall, Room 175, this event aims to explore the future of the humanities in Milwaukee and the vital role they play in the community.

Moderated by Jennifer Johung, the director of C21, the panel will feature insights from four notable figures in the local humanities sector. The lineup includes Michael Carriere from the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Art Derse of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Jodi Eastberg from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and Maggie Nettesheim Hoffmann of Marquette University. Together, they will address critical questions about the importance of the humanities in Milwaukee, particularly in light of contemporary challenges.

The discussion will delve into several key topics, including the current state of the humanities in the city and the collective efforts required to sustain and expand these fields. Panelists will pose questions such as: What does it mean to care for the humanities in Milwaukee? How can local organizations and individuals contribute to a thriving cultural environment?

Following the panel, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a reception and breakout discussions at C21’s headquarters. These smaller sessions aim to foster actionable steps that participants can take to enhance the humanities landscape in Milwaukee.
