Local Community Mourns the Loss of Musician and Educator Bruce Wisted

Bruce Alan Wisted, a beloved educator and musician, passed away recently, leaving a profound impact on his community in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He was born on January 6, 1947, to Morell and Beatrice Wisted (Olson). Bruce’s journey through life was marked by his dedication to teaching, music, and service to others.
After graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1965, Bruce pursued higher education at Bemidji State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, complemented by a minor in music. He began his career as a mathematics teacher, instructing eighth-grade and high school students in Roseau, Minnesota, for seven years.
In 1979, Bruce, alongside his brother Ron, became involved in the family business, Hardware Hank, in Detroit Lakes. The brothers successfully acquired the business in 1986, operating it until they decided to dissolve it in August 2008. Shortly thereafter, Bruce was invited by Dave Karsnia to join the staff at David-Donehower Funeral Home & Cremation Service. He accepted the role on November 1, 2008, contributing part-time for over a decade, where he managed maintenance and provided transport services.
Bruce’s passion for music remained a constant throughout his life. He played baritone saxophone in various bands, including the Lakes Community Band, the Ulen Band, and Doc & The Scrubs. His significant role as a band director for Doc & The Scrubs showcased his leadership in the local music scene until health issues prompted him to step down.
Although Bruce enjoyed his retirement, he faced health challenges, including kidney function issues that necessitated dialysis starting in November 2024. He leaves behind his wife, Gail Sidorow; brother, Ron Wisted; and several family members, including cousins and siblings-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Craig Wisted, and sister Janice Hartmann.
Bruce’s presence will be missed deeply by family, friends, and the community. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, August 25, 2024, at 1:30 PM at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to support causes close to Bruce’s heart, including the Ulen Centennial Band and the Lakes Area Community Concert Band.
Bruce Wisted will be remembered not only for his contributions to education and music but also for his kind spirit and unwavering commitment to his community.
