The School District of Beloit is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Board of Education following the resignation of board member Juan Romero. Romero, who was elected to the board in April 2023, cited the need for increased safety measures affecting students and teachers as a motivating factor for his initial candidacy.

Having moved to Beloit from Las Vegas, Romero appreciated the community’s diversity and aimed to enhance the educational environment. In a recent statement, Superintendent Dr. Willie Garrison acknowledged Romero’s contributions, saying, “The board’s leadership and oversight carry profound responsibility, directly shaping how our District serves students, supports staff, and engages families. Mr. Romero led that duty, and we appreciate the renewed energy he brought to the district.”

Call for Community Involvement

Dr. Garrison emphasized the importance of filling this vacancy with someone who is equally committed to public education, particularly as the board faces crucial decisions affecting the future of the district. “We are sad to see Mr. Romero go, but this moment presents us with a public invitation to help our Board, staff, families, and residents move together for the success of every single student in Beloit,” he added.

The School District of Beloit is encouraging community members to apply for this position until September 25, 2023. Interested applicants can find more information about the application process and necessary forms on the district’s official website, www.sdb.k12.wi.us, under the Board of Education section. Additionally, forms can be collected at the Kolak Education Center, located at 1500 Fourth St.

Application Process and Next Steps

Once applications are submitted, candidates will be invited for an interview conducted by the Board of Education. Those with questions regarding the application process can reach out to Board Secretary Michelle Shope at 608-361-4180 or via email at [email protected].

This resignation opens an opportunity for community engagement and highlights the vital role local governance plays in shaping educational policies. The district looks forward to welcoming a new member who will continue to prioritize the needs and safety of students and staff in Beloit.
