Detroit Libraries Launch Calming Stations to Support Children’s Well-Being

Detroit Public Libraries are introducing calming stations designed to help children manage stress and develop healthy emotional coping strategies as the new school year begins. Sponsored by Priority Health, these stations aim to address the growing mental health challenges faced by children aged 3-17 in the United States.
According to a press release from Priority Health, anxiety and depression among children have been on the rise, leading to increased behavioral problems. Charletta Dennis, MD, the medical director of behavioral health at Priority Health, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Priority Health is committed to combating this trend by investing in the emotional well-being of children,” she stated. “These calming stations communicate to children that their emotions are important and can be managed constructively and creatively.”
Innovative Design and Resources
The calming stations feature tree-shaped bookshelves adorned with a colorful rug, creating a welcoming environment for young visitors. Within these stations, children can access a variety of resources, including books focused on mental health, such as “Frida’s Fireworks,” co-authored by Dr. Nikki Brown of Canines for Change and Dr. Dennis herself.
In addition to literature, the stations provide self-regulation tools, including a Yoto Listening Player equipped with meditation audio cards, games, and sensory toys. A specially designed whiteboard invites children to express their feelings, while plush toys, including a “Priority Pup” and “Daniel Tiger,” are available for comfort.
Tara Hardy, director of early learning for Detroit PBS, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Priority Health, noting, “Managing emotions and learning strategies to calm down is such a necessary skill set to have.”
Locations and Accessibility
The Priority Health-sponsored calming stations are strategically placed in the children’s areas of several Detroit Public Library locations. Parents and children can find these stations at:
– Campbell Library
– Elmwood Library
– Wilder Library
– Franklin Library
– Jefferson Library
– Duffield Library
Additionally, two more calming stations are available at the Conely and Bowen Libraries. This initiative not only provides resources for emotional support but also emphasizes the importance of mental health awareness in early childhood development.
By offering these calming stations, Detroit Public Libraries aim to create a safe space for children to explore and manage their emotions effectively. As mental health concerns continue to rise among young people, such initiatives play a crucial role in fostering resilience and emotional intelligence in future generations.
