Dartmouth College is making headlines for its innovative initiative, Dartmouth Dialogues, which aims to encourage open and respectful discussions among students. The program has gained traction since its launch in January 2024, attracting significant attention from students seeking a campus culture that values diverse opinions. The initiative has seen substantial participation, with nearly 15,000 attendees at events during its first academic year.

For students like Darci Rochkind, a government and Middle Eastern studies major from Bethesda, Maryland, Dartmouth’s commitment to fostering dialogue was a key factor in her decision to attend. “I have family in Israel, and October 7 spooked me to my core. I don’t think anything else in my life has been as profound,” she stated, referring to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which heightened her awareness of the need for constructive conversations on campus.

Building a Culture of Dialogue

Dartmouth Dialogues is one of the signature priorities of President Sian Leah Beilock, aimed at cultivating a culture where community members engage in discussions across a spectrum of differences. This initiative includes a range of programs, such as speaker events, skill-building workshops, and collaborative efforts across various departments. In a recent survey led by Associate Professor of Government Sean Westwood, it was revealed that over 90% of students believe engaging with challenging perspectives is essential to their education.

The initiative not only targets students but also faculty and staff. More than 230 faculty members have received training to facilitate challenging conversations. This broad involvement underscores Dartmouth’s commitment to creating a campus environment conducive to intellectual diversity.

Empowering Student Leaders

A significant aspect of the Dartmouth Dialogues initiative is empowering students to take the lead in fostering dialogue. Kristi Clemens, the executive director of Dartmouth Dialogues, emphasizes that it is essential for students to be at the forefront of these discussions. Training programs are designed to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate complex conversations, not only in their academic circles but also as future leaders in society.

One of the standout programs under this initiative is One Small Step, a collaboration with the nonprofit organization StoryCorps. This program facilitates one-on-one conversations between individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives. In its inaugural year, 124 students participated, with many reporting meaningful exchanges that fostered connections beyond their initial differences.

For example, Talia Proshan, a cognitive science major, engaged in a transformative dialogue with Haishan Li, a guest experience manager who immigrated from China. Their structured conversation allowed them to share personal stories and perspectives, challenging their preconceived notions about each other.

The success of programs like One Small Step illustrates the initiative’s impact on social interactions within the Dartmouth community. Proshan noted, “Everyone has something to say, and if you sit down with pretty much anyone in the right circumstances, you can connect.”

The Dartmouth Dialogues initiative is also fostering student leadership through partnerships with organizations like the Dartmouth Political Union. The union has hosted public debates on pressing issues, encouraging a respectful exchange of ideas. Mac Mahoney, the union’s president, highlighted the significance of these discussions, stating that Dialogues provides essential guidance while respecting the autonomy of student-led organizations.

As Dartmouth continues to prioritize dialogue, the emphasis on training and empowering students illustrates a broader cultural shift on campus. Clemens remarked that providing various opportunities for dialogue training is critical for students’ development as leaders.

The student survey conducted by Westwood indicated that two-thirds of incoming students in the current academic year identified Dartmouth’s emphasis on dialogue as a significant factor in their decision to enroll. During orientation, new students participated in online modules and in-person discussions, ensuring they share a common understanding of civil discourse.

Dartmouth Dialogues is not merely an initiative; it represents a commitment to nurturing a community where diverse opinions are respected, and meaningful conversations can flourish. As students like Rochkind engage with these opportunities, the initiative is poised to leave a lasting impact on campus culture, equipping future leaders with the skills necessary for navigating a complex world.
