Clemson University has announced the selection of thirteen students for its esteemed scholarship programs for the class of 2025. This year’s recipients bring a diverse array of academic interests, encompassing fields such as biochemistry, biomedical engineering, psychology, nursing, political science, and theatre.

The scholars embody the core principles of the Honors College, characterized by intellectual curiosity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a strong commitment to leadership and service. According to Sarah Winslow, Dean of the Clemson University Honors College, “We are proud to welcome them into a community that will both support and stretch them as they grow as scholars and leaders of impact.”

Nine students have joined the National Scholars Program, which is open to students from all academic disciplines who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, leadership skills, and a significant impact on their communities. Meanwhile, the Breakthrough Scholars Program has admitted four students who excel in their academic pursuits and exhibit a strong passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This initiative aims to nurture future STEM leaders and foster talent within South Carolina, encouraging scholars to complete their undergraduate studies in the state.

The selection process for this year’s cohort was highly competitive, with over 6,000 applications submitted to the Honors College. Last spring, 42 finalists engaged in a comprehensive, multi-stage selection process that included interviews and collaborative activities.

After their selection, scholars receive tailored support to enhance their leadership abilities and academic experiences. This preparation is designed to help them excel both in the classroom and in extracurricular pursuits. Many scholars have gone on to earn significant university awards and nationally competitive fellowships. For instance, last May, National and Breakthrough Scholars collectively received all three of Clemson’s top awards for graduating students. Additionally, scholars have been recognized as finalists for prestigious honors such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright awards. Notably, one National Scholar became Clemson’s first Boren Scholar since 2018.

The influence of these programs extends well beyond undergraduate education. Nearly 75% of alumni from the National Scholars and Breakthrough Scholars programs have pursued graduate degrees, with half achieving doctorates in various fields, including law, medicine, engineering, and the humanities. This year’s incoming scholars are poised to continue this legacy of academic excellence, ready to make significant contributions both on campus and in their future endeavors.

Clemson University is committed to fostering a community of innovative thinkers and leaders. The selection of these thirteen scholars marks a significant step in cultivating talent that will address real-world challenges through collaboration, creativity, and critical inquiry. As they embark on their journey, these students are set to leave a lasting impact within and beyond the university.
