Calhoun Community College Launches New Respiratory Therapy Program
Calhoun Community College has unveiled its new Respiratory Therapy Lab, marking the launch of its inaugural Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Respiratory Therapy program. The opening, held on November 8, 2025, coincided with the college’s participation in Respiratory Care Week, which runs from October 19 to 25. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for respiratory therapists in north Alabama, particularly as the region faces an increase in patients suffering from conditions such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and pneumonia.
The new lab at Calhoun’s Huntsville campus is equipped with advanced technology and facilities designed to enhance the educational experience for students. The college recently received provisional accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), following a comprehensive two-year process that included curriculum development, lab construction, and partnerships with local healthcare providers.
Addressing Regional Healthcare Needs
Wes Rakestraw, Vice President of Academics at Calhoun, emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “This program is both a solution and an opportunity. We are preparing students for high-demand, high-wage careers while strengthening the healthcare workforce that serves our communities. When our students succeed, our entire region breathes easier.”
The program is designed to address the urgent need for trained respiratory therapists in the area. Over 20 local healthcare employers collaborated with the college to ensure that the curriculum aligns with industry requirements.
In a statement, Emily Russell, Director of Clinical Education, expressed her passion for the program, noting, “What excites me about Calhoun launching its first Respiratory Therapy Program is the chance to help shape the future of a profession that has meant so much to me personally. Respiratory therapists play an essential role in patient care, and by establishing this program at Calhoun, we are not only preparing the next generation of therapists but also directly serving the needs of our community.”
Expanding Opportunities for Students
Plans are already in place for further development at the Huntsville campus, with intentions to expand and renovate additional space for an even larger lab. This will create more opportunities for hands-on training using industry-standard equipment and real-world simulations.
Christy Goodwin, the Respiratory Therapy Program Director, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “This program represents a major step forward in meeting the urgent need for trained respiratory therapy professionals throughout our region. Our graduates will help people breathe easier, literally. From asthma and COPD to allergy season and critical care, respiratory therapists save lives every day.”
With the first cohort of students now enrolled, Calhoun Community College is poised to make a significant impact on the healthcare landscape in north Alabama, ensuring that future respiratory therapists are well-prepared to meet the challenges of a vital profession. This program not only represents a commitment to education but also a dedication to improving health outcomes for the community.
